If you thought that icebergs are just oddly shaped, inhospitable blocks of ice, you have mistaken. NASA just found a perfectly rectangular iceberg floating near Antarctica.
Scientists say that this is an example of a tabular iceberg – a totally natural phenomenon. Tabular icebergs, unlike their more famous “cousin” (known for sinking Titanic), have nearly vertical sides and a flat top, and they often form by calving off ice shelves. Some experts compare this process to a fingernail growing too long and cracking off at the end – this calving often results in almost perfect geometric lines.
However tempting, this iceberg is probably too unstable for a hockey match and it is moving away from the Larsen C ice shelf.
The finding was made as part of the Ice Bridge mission, the purpose of which is monitoring changes in polar ice.
However, no matter what the scientists say, the conspiracy theorists already assumed that the strange iceberg was caused by secret government experiments or even aliens.
